New Allergy Labelling Legislation
Allergy Labelling – What’s It All About?
New allergy labelling legislation comes into force in the UK on 13 Dec 2014. From this date, Food Information for Consumers Regulation (EU) No.1169/2011 requires that you provide accurate information to your customers about the content of your food with regard to allergens – see attached link for useful info from the Food Standards Agency.
Does The New Allergy Labelling Legislation Apply To Me?
This new allergy labelling legislation is particularly relevant to small businesses such as hotels, restaurants, cafe’s, sandwich bars, delicatessens etc where allergen labelling is not widely used on the foods that they sell, but it also applies to schools, hospitals and care homes. For a useful guide from the Food Standards Agency about how to comply with the new legislation click here.
Food manufacturers have provided allergen information on prepacked foods for some time, but the new legislation will require changes to the way that information about food content is displayed, to ensure customers are clear about what they are eating.
